LeBron James could be joined by the Phoenix Suns star on Saturday, according to the latest reports.
NBA pundit Mike Golic believes Ariza is ready to leave the Suns but the trade could include three teams in total.
He said: “He’s averaging just under 10 points a game there.
“Now, no trade can be completed officially until Saturday when players like Ariza who were signed in summer free agency become eligible to be traded.
“Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope could be part of a larger potential deal, they’re looking for a three team deal.
“Suns are looking for draft picks and a guard out of this thing so that’s where Caldwell-Pope comes into play.
“We know how important Ariza was to the rockets last year, certainly the Rockets are looking for a little bit of last year this years for sure.
“I don’t think Ariza will complain too much going from the Suns right now who are a young, building team and we all know that.”
But fellow NBA pundit Stephen A. Smith believes Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Ingram could suffer if Ariza arrives.
Speaking about Ariza, Smith told First Take: “He brings defence – elite defence, I might add – leadership and experience to any roster that he goes on. So he clearly is a plus.
“A lot of what has ailed the Houston Rockets this year is the fact that Trevor Ariza is not there.
“Don’t even think otherwise, he has a lot to do with that.
“Having said all of that, the Lakers’ willingness to pursue this… I’m kinda surprised because why would you want to do this if you’ve got [Kyle] Kuzma and [Brandon] Ingram?
“Obviously, defensive experience is the reason why. But his arrival is going to compromise somebody’s minutes.”
The Lakers and LeBron James return to action on Tuesday morning at 3.30am UK time (7.30pm PT) against Miami Heat.
